effects ranging from some that are physically unattractive, such
as acne and breast development in men, to others that are life threatening.

T
he nonmedical use of
anabolic/androgenic steroids among adolescents and young adults
is of growing concern. As many as half a million Americans under
age 18 may be abusing these drugs to improve athletic performance,
appearance and self-image. Yet a growing body of evidence suggests

physical and psychological health.

Athletes,
whether they are young or old, professional or amateur, are always
looking to gain an advantage over their opponents. The desire for
an "edge" exists in all sports, at all levels of play.
Successful athletes rely on practice and hard work to increase their
skill, speed, power, and ability. However, some athletes resort
to drugs to improve their performance on the field or the court.

Learn
what the Oregon Health and Science University to dissuade athletes
from using steroids. ATLAS was developed through a 5-year grant
(DA-07356) from the National
Institute on Drug Abuse. Initiated in 1993, ATLAS targets male
adolescent athletes use of anabolic steroids, alcohol and other
drugs and use of sport supplements, while improving healthy nutrition
and exercise practices. ATLAS has a team-centered design, which
provides a non-stigmatizing atmosphere, such that content can be
gender-specific and address etiologies and risks of substance abuse
unique to male adolescents.
